I think I’m beginning to really understand the cultural context behind the term the “Lonesome West.” I went from feeling overcrowded in the city to isolating myself in the middle of the Mojave desert. Out here there’s the same kind of weirdos to be weary of, but not really. Actually, the weirdos out here are rural weirdos and they are more spread out. It seems both freeing and dangerous simultaneously. In the city, you could come across another person who could mean to do you harm but because you’re in close proximity to other people, the chances that person could choose to inflict danger on you and not get caught would be very low. Out here, you could come across another person with no one else around and they could do anything to you (or you to him/her) and with nobody to bear witness to it, the chances increase. I know this sounds like a dark and untrusting concept to put to concentration. I think that was what drew me out here; the lingering feeling of lawlessness in the wild west.
